Avengi Ja Nahin

Recently, the video of Rabbi’s latest album’s title track was released. The song consists of all the sounds we have come to associate with Rabbi Shergill.

It seems to be on a lighter note as compared to the other songs in the album which are considered to be about communal voilence. Nevertheless, it sounds very catchy and Rabbi doesn’t dissapoint.

As is always with Rabbi’s songs, there are a few stanzas that stick with you more than others. I especially identify the song with these lines, since these are also easier to understand :p :

Je maen avan taenu labhan
Labhengi ja nahi
Koi rah nishani apni
Chhadengi ja nahi

Thankfully, I was able to find the lyrics to this song through the unofficial Rabbi Blog, Rabbism, which linked me to the the album’s official website. Here goes

Tere larian ‘ch
Din kinney beetey
Kujh kat gaye
Kujh jamaa keetey

Ni maen akk gia
Bol chup teri parhda
Taenu parhna na
Sohnie hai mere vas da

Putthian-sidhian chhad das
Avengi ja nahi
Mere munh ‘te kesan di chhan
Pavengi ja nahi

Koi souhan jhutthian-sachian
Khavengi ja nahi
Mere munh ‘te kesan di chhan
Pavengi…das avengi

Ik miley na
Sunehe utton ghaldi
Kehrhe passeon
Gall eh ve fabdi

Keh ton dardi eyn
M’kha koi taenu puchhe
Ki tun lukdi eyn
Tan jo koi taenu labhe

Je maen avan taenu labhan
Labhengi ja nahi
Koi rah nishani apni
Chhadengi ja nahi

Buha khulla kamre apne da
Rakhengi ja nahi
Mere munh ‘te kesan di chhan
Pavengi…das avengi

Taenu yaad us
Pal us vaar da
Jehrha hoia na si
Os izhar da

Jadon dubia si
Jadon kujh taria si maen
Ki tun vi dubbi Si

Now, for most of us who aren’t that good at punjabi, you can hover over the tougher highlighted words to know the meaning. If even that doesn’t help, you can download the lyrics with their english translation.

And in case you are still wondering, “Avengi Ja Nahin”, is more like, “A(a)vengi ya nahin”

Wow, I’ve been looking for this for quite a while. Thanks!

This is awesome, a beautiful song by Rabbi, once again. Poets and singers like Rabbi and Batalvi prove that it does not matter the type of a language you are writing in. Punjabi has always had a reputation of being “strong” but it can be used in favor of your own creation, to convey something strong in a very slick fashion.

Hunny, I am delighted that you could get this song. This must go on Rabbism too or may be a link to this post?

@aman: Ya. But I don’t write at Rabbism. So perhaps you could do that.

@sameer: Your welcome.

Beautiful song. Never imagined I would be hearing such a romantic song in Punjabi. My parents are from Punjab, though I can only understand it, not a fluent speaker; hearing this song makes me want to invest more effort in to learning the langauge :-).

I’m not even a Punjabi and still enjoyed the song like anything. Beautiful, Beautiful song.

You can find the English translation of the lyrics at ajn.co.in

Don’t be foolish! This is poor track and poorer poetry. Prediction - Avenghi ya nahin is not likely to stay afloat. To compare it to Shiv Batalvi is blasphemous. Such poems die dime a dozen in small towns of Punjab.

this is a great number
it seems you are new to poetry or heartless
this is a greatest song

@Minnie: I would agree on the fact that Batalvi is at a completely different level as a poet than Rabbi, but Rabbi’s charm I guess is in the complete package. And, I wouldn’t say his poetry is dime a dozen either. But that’s just me :)

@jolly: I think everyone has the right to express their point of view. So calling someone a fool just because he/she expressed their point of view ain’t right.

Thanks Guy … for the Vedio … and as Usual Rabbi’s voice is so soothing . Waiting for more songs from this album and hope they are good too.

Just to extend Sameer’s point, I would say that Rabbi Shergill has actually revolutionized not just Punjabi but complete Indian music industry. When our music industry was left with lyrics like “Haihuku Haihuku” and “Sansanana Saaye Saaye” in the name of being creative, Rabbi Shergill had the guts to explore great Sufis and poets like Baba BulleShah, Shiv Kumar Batalvi, Waris Shah et al.

And he does not stop there with his experiments. Rabbi gets his inspiration from Sufis as much as he gets it from Rock artists like Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin fame), Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen. And personally I was waiting for an artist who had the audacity to give me a concoction of those ingredients.

Also, my young brother Ankit is a docile and humble guy and probably missed the point, that it was Minnie Randhawa who called everyone loving Rabbi’s music a “fool” and not Jolly. I do not care what anyone thinks of Rabbi or my choice of music, but according to me, right-to-free-speech does not translate into right-to-free-denigration.

dear minnie
please lisent all songs
you will blow out in deep sea and sky
the deepest album till now

challa (awsome)
bilqis (the words can not explain this song)

i wonder that how rabbi find these words

this is a full sea in a little jug

song return to unity is as smooth as all euoropian songs
ballo is also very nice
every song has a unique tune

@AJ: You put it really, really well. I agree to the last percent.

@Jolly: I agree with you, its quite a beautiful album. Unfortunately I have listened to just one of the tracks, and small bits from the other tracks, but whatever I’ve heard is great. And all of it has that “addictive” blend, in the sense that as you keep listening, you keep getting addicted.

Great ..man.. it was.. nice to see more or rabbi’s fan.. and .thx .. for the text translation .that was good :)
cheers.
keep rocking. ..

i was privileged to hear the song sung by rabbi himself. live. in his studio.
